A rare screening of this 1922 historical drama, accompanied by a live performance of a newly commissioned score by multi-instrumentalist David Allison.
This impressive and rarely screened biopic of one of Scotland’s best-known outlaws stars David Hawthorne in full tartan kilt and tammy, and tells the story of the MacGregors in the early 18th century. Shot entirely on location in the Trossachs and nearby Stirling Castle, the film includes epic fight scenes, with over 800 men of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders enlisted as extras in a dramatic battle.
This silent film will be accompanied by a live performance of a newly commissioned score by David Allison, which premiered at the Hippodrome Silent Film Festival (HippFest) in Bo’ness earlier this year.
David’s peerless improvisational skills and talent for composition make him one of Scotland’s most exciting and prodigious musical talents. David has created several successful live soundtracks for silent films, including Last of the Mohicans (HippFest 2018, Celtic Connections 2019) and the 1922 horror classic Nosferatu (HippFest 2011); The Island Tapes and The St Kilda Tapes which toured and sold out international venues. David has also produced three solo studio albums: Reporting, Guitar Gi-tar and Acoustic Movies.
HippFest is Scotland’s first and only Festival celebrating silent film and live music, and has established a reputation for excellence in commissioning new music and touring to venues across Scotland. We are delighted to bring one of their latest commissions to Screenplay as part of a Scottish tour. Save the Date! 10th HippFest: 18 – 22 March 2020 www.hippfest.co.uk
